Melbourne layover guide for crew
Laneway restaurants, coffee and breakfast that crew recommend in Melbourne, plus SkyBus, taxi and rideshare options from Tullamarine, tap water and 000.
Updated 29 October 2026
Melbourne Airport is at Tullamarine, about 20 to 25 kilometres from the CBD, and there is no train to it yet. The crew pins cluster in the CBD laneways and in the inner suburbs of North Melbourne, Cremorne and Albert Park.
Food, early and late
In the CBD, crew pinned MoVida on Hosier Lane, Maha on Bond Street and Serai on Racing Club Lane as sit-down restaurants. Soi 38 on Royal Lane is a quick bite. For late food, Yeonga BBQ at 1 Cobden Street in North Melbourne carries the late-night tag.
For breakfast, crew pinned The Commons Collective on Moubray Street, plus Top Paddock on Dale Street and Denis the Menace on Chestnut Street, both in Cremorne. Crew tag Dundas & Faussett in Albert Park for breakfast and sit-down meals. If your flight lands late, read our guide to late-night food after a late arrival and check the hours in the app.
Coffee
Palace Coffee is on Ridgway Place in the CBD, and Tone Coffee Roasters is on Queensberry Street in North Melbourne. Crew pinned both as coffee spots.
Getting around and staying safe
From the airport. Melbourne Airport says SkyBus runs an express service to the city centre around the clock, and puts the trip at about 25 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. SkyBus does not use myki, so you buy a ticket online or at the terminal before you board. It serves St Kilda and Frankston.
Buses and the trip back. The 901 SmartBus runs between Broadmeadows Station and the airport, and most local services use myki, which lets you change between trains, trams and buses. The airport says its rail link, Melbourne Airport Rail, is underway. For the trip back, it suggests adding 60 minutes to a public transport journey to allow for road delays and works.
Rideshare. The airport has dedicated pick-up and drop-off areas for rideshare at all terminals. Each operator sets its own price, and the airport charges a per-trip fee that rideshare companies may pass on to you.
Taxis. Taxi ranks are close to all terminals. The airport says the CBD is about a 30-minute fare away and warns passengers not to accept any offer of a taxi outside the designated ranks at Terminals 1, 2 and 4. Our guide to taxi and rideshare safety abroad has the checks to make in any city.
Tap water. Yarra Valley Water, a Melbourne water retailer, says that in Melbourne tap water is safe to drink straight from the tap, and that boiling or filtering it is not needed for safety. Our tap water guide covers other cities.
Emergency. Call 000. On a mobile, 112 reaches the same service. Our guide to emergency numbers for crew cities lists the rest.
